Early Life of Lolo Soetoro

Soetoro Martodihardjo, “Lolo” Soetoro, was born on January 2, 1935 in Bandoeng, West Java. Coming from a large family of ten children with his parents, tragedy struck them during the Indonesian National Revolution when their house was burned down and his father and eldest brother were killed.

 He managed to flee with his mother to the countryside and attended Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta where he acquired a bachelor’s in geography. Subsequently, he was employed as a civilian of the Indonesian Army Topographic Service. In 1962 he was granted the East-West Center for graduate study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa which eventually earned him an M.A. degree in geography by June 1964. 

Soetoro Martodihardjo, called “Lolo” Soetoro in the Javanese language, began life on January 2nd, 1935 in Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). His father worked at a mining office near Yogyakarta while being the ninth of ten siblings to his parents. 

Dutch military forces burned down the house killing both father and eldest brother while managing to flee with mother towards countryside areas for safety reasons. Consequently went on to attend Gadjah Mada University for a bachelor’s in geography field, a civilian employee of the Indonesian Army Topographic Service afterward.

Lolo twice entered into a union of matrimony. First, on 15th March 1965, he was united in wedlock to Ann Dunham who was recently divorced and whom he had encountered at the University of Hawaii where they both were studying. 

Ann already had a son called Barack Obama who went on to become the 44th President of the United States. Following their marriage, they resided in Menteng Dalam village in South Jakarta for two and a half years while director at the Indonesia-America Friendship Institute.

In 1965, he reunited with single mother Ann Dunham after they had met at the East-West Center while studying at the University of Hawaii; they were married shortly after on March 15th. One year later, Dunham and Obama stayed in Honolulu while Soetoro returned to Indonesia for work and completed his duties with General Suharto, Indonesia’s second President. Following his completion of a study of anthropology in 1967, he moved to Jakarta with her six-year-old son to live with Soetoro.
